Morning: Explore Manali’s Temples

After breakfast at your hotel, check out and begin the day with sightseeing in Manali before continuing towards Dharamshala. The morning offers an opportunity to explore two of Manali’s best-known temples and appreciate the region’s traditional architecture and spiritual heritage.

Begin with Hadimba Devi Temple, situated amid a beautiful forest of towering deodar trees in the Dhungri area. Dedicated to Goddess Hadimba, the temple is known for its distinctive wooden architecture, intricately carved entrance and peaceful natural setting. Take a leisurely walk around the temple grounds, admire the traditional craftsmanship and enjoy the forest atmosphere before returning to your vehicle.

Continue to Vashisht Temple, located in the village of Vashisht near Manali. The village is known for its traditional stone-and-wood architecture, spiritual significance and natural hot springs. Explore the temple complex, browse the surrounding lanes and experience the quieter atmosphere of this historic settlement. Bathing facilities, if available, should be checked locally.

Afternoon: Scenic Drive to Dharamshala

After completing Manali sightseeing, begin the road journey towards Dharamshala. The route passes through the Kullu Valley and continues towards the Kangra region, with changing mountain scenery, river valleys, forested slopes and small Himachali settlements along the way.

The journey is relatively long, so plan for refreshment breaks and a lunch stop en route. Travel time can vary considerably with traffic, weather, roadworks and the number of stops. Starting early from Manali is recommended to make the transfer more comfortable and avoid reaching your hotel too late.

On arrival in Dharamshala, check in to your hotel and take some time to relax. Depending on your hotel’s location, you may enjoy views of the Dhauladhar mountain range, forested hills or the Kangra Valley. Dharamshala has two distinct areas: Lower Dharamshala, with its town markets and everyday commercial activity, and Upper Dharamshala, including McLeod Ganj, known for Tibetan culture, cafés and mountain scenery.

Evening: Relax at Your Hotel

Keep the evening free after the long drive. Enjoy a warm meal at the hotel, relax in your room or take a short walk near your accommodation if time and weather permit. A relaxed evening will help you prepare for the following day’s sightseeing around McLeod Ganj and Bhagsu.

Overnight stay in Dharamshala.

Highlights: Hadimba Devi Temple, Vashisht Temple, scenic Himalayan road journey and a comfortable overnight stay in Dharamshala.

Route: Dharamshala → McLeod Ganj → Bhagsunag → Dharamshala

Approximate local driving: 15–30 km, depending on hotel location and sightseeing order

Estimated sightseeing duration: 5–7 hours, excluding extended walks

Meals: Breakfast

Overnight stay: Dharamshala

Morning: Visit the Dalai Lama Temple Complex

After breakfast, set out to explore McLeod Ganj, one of the most distinctive cultural destinations in Himachal Pradesh. Often associated with Tibetan Buddhism and the Tibetan community in exile, the area combines monasteries, prayer flags, small shops, cafés and views of the surrounding mountains.

Visit the Tsuglagkhang Complex, commonly referred to by travellers as the Dalai Lama Temple. The complex is an important spiritual centre and includes prayer areas and religious spaces associated with Tibetan Buddhist traditions. Visitors can experience the peaceful atmosphere, observe devotional practices where permitted and learn about the region’s cultural heritage.

Dress respectfully, follow posted instructions and be mindful of worshippers. The presence of the Dalai Lama and access to particular areas or events should never be assumed; entry arrangements and schedules may vary.

Late Morning: Explore McLeod Ganj

Continue through the streets and lanes of McLeod Ganj, where Tibetan handicraft shops, small cafés, bakeries and local eateries create a lively yet relaxed atmosphere. You can browse for souvenirs, prayer flags, woollen products and handmade items, or stop for tea or coffee while enjoying the mountain surroundings.

The area is particularly appealing to travellers who enjoy a combination of cultural experiences and unhurried exploration. Allow time to walk through the market rather than treating it as only a quick shopping stop.

Afternoon: Bhagsunag Temple and Waterfall

Proceed to Bhagsunag Temple, a well-known local shrine surrounded by hills near McLeod Ganj. The temple has religious significance and is associated with local legends about King Bhagsu and the deity Nag. Spend some time exploring the temple area before continuing towards Bhagsu Waterfall.

The walk towards Bhagsu Waterfall takes you along a popular uphill route through the surrounding landscape. The sound of flowing water and the views of the valley make this a rewarding outing for visitors who enjoy nature and light walking. The walking time depends on your pace, starting point and trail conditions, so wear comfortable shoes and carry drinking water.

Water flow varies by season, and the trail can become slippery during or after rain. During winter, weather and access conditions may also affect the visit. Follow local safety guidance and avoid climbing onto wet rocks.

Evening: Leisure Time in Dharamshala

After sightseeing, return to your hotel or remain in McLeod Ganj for some additional leisure time, depending on the day’s schedule. You may choose to enjoy a café, browse the market or simply relax and take in the mountain views.

Return to your hotel for dinner at your own arrangement or as included in your selected meal plan. Overnight stay in Dharamshala.

Highlights: Dalai Lama Temple complex, Tibetan culture, McLeod Ganj market, Bhagsunag Temple, Bhagsu Waterfall and mountain scenery.

Route: Dharamshala → Dalhousie

Approximate distance: 115–125 km

Estimated driving time: 4–4.5 hours in normal conditions

Meals: Breakfast

Overnight stay: Dalhousie

Morning: Breakfast and Departure for Dalhousie

Enjoy breakfast at your hotel before checking out and departing for Dalhousie. The drive takes you through the Kangra region towards the Chamba district, passing small towns, forested stretches and scenic mountain roads.

Although the distance is manageable, the journey can take longer during holiday periods, road congestion or poor weather. A morning departure is recommended so that you have time to check in and enjoy Dalhousie without rushing.

Afternoon: Hotel Check-in and Leisure

On reaching Dalhousie, check in to your hotel and relax. Spread across several hills, Dalhousie is known for its colonial-era architecture, pine and deodar forests, cool climate and panoramic views of the surrounding mountain ranges.

The town offers a quieter atmosphere than some of Himachal Pradesh’s busier tourist centres. Depending on your accommodation, you may enjoy a view of wooded slopes, the valley or the distant mountains from your room or hotel terrace.

After a break, you can head out to explore the central town area at a relaxed pace.

Evening: Colonial Town Walk

Spend the evening around Gandhi Chowk and the Mall Road area, where shops, cafés and historic buildings provide a pleasant setting for a leisurely walk. Dalhousie retains traces of its British-era hill-station character, visible in its old buildings, churches and traditional town layout.

If time permits, visit St. John’s Church near Gandhi Chowk or St. Francis Church near Subhash Chowk, subject to opening arrangements. Both are associated with Dalhousie’s colonial heritage and offer a contrast to the region’s temples and monasteries.

Browse the local market for woollen products, handicrafts and regional souvenirs, or sit down at a café and enjoy the cool mountain air. Return to your hotel after the walk.

Overnight stay in Dalhousie.

Highlights: Scenic drive from Dharamshala, hotel check-in, Gandhi Chowk, Mall Road and Dalhousie’s colonial atmosphere.

Route: Dalhousie → Khajjiar → Pathankot or Chandigarh

Approximate distance: Dalhousie to Khajjiar: 22 km one way

Estimated driving time: Around 45–60 minutes each way, depending on road conditions

Departure journey: Allow approximately 4–5 hours from the Khajjiar area to Pathankot and around 8–10 hours to Chandigarh, subject to traffic and route conditions

Meals: Breakfast

Tour ends: Pathankot or Chandigarh

Morning: Breakfast and Excursion to Khajjiar

Start the day with breakfast at your hotel, check out and proceed towards Khajjiar, one of the most picturesque destinations in the Chamba region. Often nicknamed the “Mini Switzerland of India,” Khajjiar is known for its wide grassy meadow surrounded by dense deodar and cedar forests.

The journey from Dalhousie is short but scenic, with winding roads and views of the surrounding hills. On arrival, take a walk around the meadow and enjoy the open landscape, fresh mountain air and forested backdrop. The setting is ideal for photography, relaxed walks and spending some time away from the busier town areas.

Visit Khajji Nag Temple, a historic temple near the meadow associated with local religious traditions. If you have additional time and the facilities are operating, you may find seasonal leisure activities in the area. Any horse rides or other activities should be arranged directly with authorised local operators, with prices and safety arrangements confirmed beforehand.

The appearance of the meadow changes throughout the year. Spring and summer often bring greener surroundings, while winter may bring snow when weather conditions allow. Snowfall is not guaranteed, and heavy snow can affect road access.

Afternoon: Transfer to Pathankot or Chandigarh

After exploring Khajjiar, begin your onward journey to the selected departure point. If you are travelling to Pathankot for a train, allow sufficient time for the drive and station reporting. If your departure is from Chandigarh, plan for a substantially longer road journey and confirm your flight or train timing before finalising the sightseeing schedule.

The transfer time can increase because of traffic, roadworks, weather or seasonal congestion. For an early flight or train, consider arranging an earlier departure or an additional overnight stay rather than attempting a rushed connection.

Your Himachal holiday concludes with memories of mountain scenery, spiritual landmarks, Tibetan culture and the colonial charm of Dalhousie.

Highlights: Khajjiar meadow, Khajji Nag Temple, forest and mountain scenery, and onward transfer to Pathankot or Chandigarh.
