Itinerary

Arrival: Srinagar Airport

Transfer: Srinagar Airport → Dal Lake Houseboat

Approx. Distance: 15–20 km, depending on the houseboat location

Approx. Travel Time: 40 minutes–1 hour

Arrive in Srinagar, the beautiful summer capital of Jammu & Kashmir, known for its serene lakes, Mughal gardens, snow-covered mountain views and rich Kashmiri culture. On arrival at Srinagar Airport, meet your driver and proceed towards the famous Dal Lake, where a traditional Kashmiri houseboat experience awaits.

Unlike a conventional hotel stay, spending the night on a houseboat offers a more intimate introduction to Kashmir. These beautifully decorated wooden boats feature traditional Kashmiri interiors, intricate woodwork and comfortable rooms, creating a peaceful setting surrounded by the waters of Dal Lake.

After check-in and some time to relax, enjoy a Shikara ride on Dal Lake. Glide gently across the calm waters while taking in views of the surrounding mountains, floating gardens, houseboats and colourful Shikaras. Depending on the time of day, you may also see local vendors moving across the lake, floating markets and small boats carrying flowers, handicrafts and other local produce.

The Shikara ride is especially beautiful in the late afternoon or around sunset, when the changing light creates reflections across the lake. It is also a wonderful opportunity to experience the slower pace of life that makes Srinagar so distinctive.

Return to your houseboat and spend the evening at leisure. Enjoy traditional Kashmiri hospitality and, depending on your houseboat arrangement, savour a warm dinner featuring local flavours.

Highlights:

  • Arrival and transfer to Dal Lake

  • Traditional Kashmiri houseboat stay

  • Shikara ride on Dal Lake 🚤

  • Views of mountains, floating gardens and lake life

  • Relaxing evening surrounded by Kashmiri hospitality

Overnight Stay: Srinagar – Houseboat

Route: Srinagar → Sonamarg → Zoji La → Drass → Kargil

Approx. Distance: 200–220 km

Approx. Travel Time: 7–9 hours, excluding sightseeing and traffic stops

After breakfast, begin your first major mountain drive towards Kargil, following one of the most scenic routes connecting the Kashmir Valley with Ladakh.

Leave Srinagar and travel towards Sonamarg, often referred to as the “Meadow of Gold.” The landscape gradually changes as the road climbs away from the greener Kashmir Valley towards a more rugged Himalayan environment. Depending on the season and road conditions, you can expect spectacular views of alpine valleys, mountain streams and snow-covered peaks.

Continue towards Zoji La Pass, one of the most important mountain passes on the Srinagar–Leh route. The pass forms a natural transition between the lush Kashmir Valley and the much more arid landscape of Ladakh. The scenery changes dramatically as you cross the pass, with green forests and meadows giving way to rocky mountains and high-altitude terrain.

The journey then descends towards Drass, one of the highest permanently inhabited regions in the world and widely known for its extremely cold winters. The valley is surrounded by dramatic mountains, making the approach to Drass particularly scenic.

Continue towards the Kargil War Memorial at Drass, located near the foothills of the Tololing mountain range. The memorial commemorates the Indian soldiers who lost their lives during the Kargil War of 1999. Spend some time at the memorial, learning about the history of the conflict and paying tribute to the soldiers.

After the visit, continue towards Kargil, an important town and traditional stopover on the Srinagar–Leh highway. Upon arrival, check in to your hotel and relax after the long mountain journey.

The evening can be kept relaxed, allowing you to recover from the day's drive and prepare for the higher-altitude journey towards Leh the following day.

Highlights:

  • Scenic drive through the Kashmir Valley

  • Sonamarg and Himalayan mountain landscapes

  • Crossing the spectacular Zoji La Pass

  • Drass Valley and high-altitude landscapes

  • Visit to Kargil War Memorial

  • Arrival and overnight stay in Kargil

Overnight Stay: Kargil – Hotel

Route: Kargil → Mulbekh → Lamayuru → Nimmu → Indus–Zanskar Confluence → Leh

Approx. Distance: 210–220 km

Approx. Travel Time: 7–9 hours, excluding sightseeing stops

Wake up to the rugged mountain surroundings of Kargil and enjoy breakfast before beginning the drive towards Leh, the heart of Ladakh.

As you leave Kargil, the scenery gradually becomes more dramatic and distinctly Ladakhi. Green valleys give way to barren mountains, rocky slopes and vast high-altitude landscapes. This striking contrast is one of the most memorable aspects of travelling from Kashmir into Ladakh by road.

Your first major sightseeing stop is Mulbekh, a historic settlement famous for its impressive rock-carved Maitreya Buddha. The ancient sculpture is carved into a rock face and reflects the deep Buddhist heritage of the region. The surrounding landscape also provides an early glimpse of the stark yet beautiful terrain that characterizes Ladakh.

Continue towards Lamayuru, one of the most spectacular areas along this route. The region is famous for its unusual eroded mountains and moon-like terrain, often referred to as the “Moonland of Ladakh.” Visit Lamayuru Monastery, one of the oldest and most important monasteries in Ladakh. Perched dramatically above the valley, the monastery offers panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and a fascinating introduction to Ladakh's Buddhist culture.

Continue your journey towards Leh through a succession of dramatic mountain landscapes and high-altitude valleys. One of the most rewarding stops of the day is the Indus–Zanskar Confluence, near Nimmu, where the waters of the Indus and Zanskar rivers meet.

The viewpoint provides a striking natural spectacle, particularly when the contrasting colours of the two rivers are visible. It is an excellent place to stop for photographs and appreciate the scale of the surrounding Himalayan landscape.

From the confluence, continue towards Leh, gradually entering the main Ladakh valley. The landscape becomes broader and the surrounding mountains create an impressive approach to the town.

On arrival in Leh, check in to your hotel and keep the remainder of the evening relaxed. Since Leh is located at a significantly higher altitude than both Srinagar and Kargil, it is important to avoid strenuous activities on arrival. Drink plenty of water, rest well and allow your body time to adjust to the altitude.

Highlights:

  • Scenic Kargil–Leh mountain drive

  • Visit to the ancient Mulbekh Buddha

  • Explore Lamayuru Monastery

  • Experience the dramatic “Moonland of Ladakh”

  • Visit the Indus–Zanskar Confluence

  • Arrival in Leh

  • Evening for rest and acclimatization

Overnight Stay: Leh – Hotel

Approx. Distance: 30–40 km, depending on local routing

Approx. Travel Time: 2–3 hours of driving, excluding sightseeing and breaks

After breakfast at the hotel, begin your second day in Ladakh with a light and relaxed sightseeing experience around Leh. Since you are still acclimatizing to the high altitude, the day is intentionally planned without long drives or strenuous activities. The focus is on exploring Leh’s heritage, Buddhist culture and panoramic landscapes at an easy pace, with sufficient time to rest between visits.

Morning – Visit Shanti Stupa

Begin your sightseeing with a visit to Shanti Stupa, one of Leh’s most recognizable landmarks. Located on a hilltop overlooking Leh town, the white-domed Buddhist monument offers spectacular views of the surrounding mountains, valleys and the town below. The peaceful setting makes it an ideal first stop for the day.

Take some time to admire the traditional Buddhist architecture, prayer wheels and beautifully detailed reliefs around the stupa. The elevated location also provides an excellent opportunity to appreciate how Leh is surrounded by the dramatic Himalayan landscape. Keep the visit relaxed and avoid rushing, particularly while your body continues to adjust to the altitude.

Continue to Leh Palace

From Shanti Stupa, proceed towards Leh Palace, a historic nine-storey royal residence overlooking the old town of Leh. Built in the traditional Tibetan architectural style, the palace provides an insight into the region’s royal history and cultural heritage.

Walk through the historic sections of the palace and explore its traditional interiors, prayer spaces and old chambers, while learning about the former royal family and the history of Ladakh. The palace also offers beautiful views over Leh town, making it a rewarding stop for both history enthusiasts and photography lovers.

As this is an acclimatization-focused day, take your time while exploring and include short pauses whenever required.

Afternoon – Visit Thiksey Monastery

After exploring Leh Palace, continue towards Thiksey Monastery, one of the most impressive Buddhist monasteries in the Leh region. Located approximately 19 km from Leh, the monastery is dramatically positioned on a hill and is often admired for its resemblance to the Potala Palace in Lhasa.

Thiksey is an important centre of Tibetan Buddhist culture and is known for its multi-level architecture, prayer halls, murals, religious artwork and collection of Buddhist scriptures and artefacts. One of the highlights of the monastery is the large Maitreya Buddha statue, which rises through multiple levels of the temple.

Spend some peaceful time exploring the monastery complex and observing the surrounding Himalayan scenery. The visit offers a deeper understanding of Ladakh’s spiritual traditions and gives the day a meaningful cultural dimension beyond sightseeing.

Leisure Afternoon – Relax & Acclimatize in Leh

After returning to Leh, keep the afternoon deliberately free for rest and acclimatization. You may relax at the hotel, enjoy a leisurely lunch or, if you are feeling comfortable, take a gentle walk around the nearby market area.

Avoid strenuous activities, prolonged walking or unnecessary exertion. Staying hydrated and allowing your body adequate time to adjust to Leh’s altitude is especially important during the first few days of a Ladakh trip.

The evening can be spent at leisure, enjoying the peaceful atmosphere of Leh before an early night and a comfortable rest at the hotel.

Day Highlights

  • Visit the hilltop Shanti Stupa and enjoy panoramic views of Leh.

  • Explore the historic Leh Palace and discover Ladakh’s royal heritage.

  • Visit the magnificent Thiksey Monastery and experience its Buddhist architecture and spiritual atmosphere.

  • Enjoy a relaxed afternoon dedicated to rest and acclimatization.

  • Experience Leh’s culture and heritage without undertaking a strenuous day trip.

Overnight Stay: Leh

After breakfast, begin your first full day of sightseeing in Ladakh with an excursion through the picturesque Sham Valley.

This region offers an excellent combination of Himalayan scenery, cultural attractions and unusual natural landmarks, making it an ideal introductory sightseeing day after acclimatization.

Visit Hall of Fame

Your first major stop is the Hall of Fame, a museum and memorial dedicated to the courage and contribution of the Indian Armed Forces.

The museum provides visitors with information about the history of the region, military operations, local culture and the challenging environment in which the armed forces operate. It is also an informative introduction to Ladakh's strategic importance.

Spend time exploring the exhibits and learning about the region before continuing towards the next attractions.

Magnetic Hill

Continue towards Magnetic Hill, one of the most talked-about attractions on the Leh-Sham Valley route.

The location is famous for the optical illusion that creates the impression that vehicles are moving uphill against gravity when placed at a particular point on the road. The surrounding barren mountains and dramatic landscape make the stop particularly scenic.

Take some time to enjoy the views and photographs before continuing the journey.

Gurudwara Pathar Sahib

Proceed to Gurudwara Pathar Sahib, an important Sikh pilgrimage site located amid the mountains.

The peaceful surroundings and beautiful setting make this a meaningful stop during the excursion. Visitors can spend some time inside the gurudwara, observe the religious traditions and enjoy the calm atmosphere.

The visit also offers an opportunity to experience the cultural diversity of Ladakh, where Buddhist, Sikh and other Himalayan traditions coexist.

Indus & Zanskar River Confluence

One of the scenic highlights of the Sham Valley excursion is the Sangam Point, where the turquoise waters of the Zanskar River meet the comparatively darker waters of the Indus River.

The contrasting colours of the two rivers create a striking natural landscape, particularly when viewed from the elevated viewpoints along the road.

Spend some time photographing the confluence and surrounding mountains before beginning your return journey towards Leh.

Return to Leh

After completing the Sham Valley sightseeing, drive back towards Leh. Depending on the sightseeing duration and road conditions, you should reach Leh by afternoon or early evening.

Approx. Distance: 65–80 km one way, depending on the sightseeing route

Approx. Travel Time: 5–7 hours including sightseeing stops

Route: Leh → Hall of Fame → Magnetic Hill → Gurudwara Pathar Sahib → Sangam → Leh

Overnight Stay: Leh

Meals: Breakfast

After breakfast, check out from your Leh hotel and begin one of the most scenic drives of your Leh Ladakh tour package towards Nubra Valley.

Today's route takes you across the spectacular Khardung La Pass, followed by a descent into the contrasting landscapes of Nubra's cold desert.

Drive Towards Khardung La Pass

Leave Leh and gradually climb towards Khardung La. The landscape changes dramatically as you gain altitude, with the green surroundings of the lower valley giving way to rugged Himalayan mountains and barren high-altitude terrain.

Khardung La is one of the most famous high mountain passes associated with Ladakh and is an iconic stop on Leh–Nubra itineraries. Current travel references commonly place the Leh–Nubra journey at roughly 125–160 km, with travel times varying considerably depending on road conditions, traffic and stops.

Spend a short amount of time at the pass for photographs and to appreciate the surrounding mountain scenery. Because of the high altitude, avoid prolonged physical exertion.

Descend Towards Nubra Valley

Continue your drive downhill from Khardung La towards Nubra Valley. The scenery gradually transforms from rocky high-altitude terrain into a fascinating cold-desert landscape.

Nubra is known for its dramatic combination of mountains, river valleys, greenery and sand dunes, making it one of the most visually distinctive regions of Ladakh.

Visit Diskit Monastery

Upon reaching the Nubra region, visit Diskit Monastery, one of the area's most important Buddhist monasteries.

The monastery is dramatically positioned above the valley and provides panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. The giant Maitreya Buddha statue overlooking the valley is one of the most recognizable sights in Nubra.

Take time to explore the monastery complex, appreciate the traditional Buddhist architecture and enjoy the views of the Nubra landscape.

Hunder Sand Dunes & Double-Humped Camel Ride

Continue towards Hunder, famous for its unusual cold-desert sand dunes.

The contrast between the white sand, rugged Himalayan mountains and green vegetation along the Shyok River creates a landscape that feels remarkably different from conventional desert environments.

A highlight here is the optional double-humped Bactrian camel ride. These camels are historically associated with the old Silk Route and have become one of the signature experiences of Nubra Valley.

Enjoy the camel ride across the sand dunes and spend some time photographing the unique landscape.

Evening in Nubra

Later, proceed to your hotel, camp or resort and check in.

The evening can be spent relaxing amidst the peaceful surroundings of Nubra Valley. Depending on your accommodation and weather conditions, you may enjoy a bonfire or simply spend time appreciating the clear Himalayan night sky.

Approx. Distance: 125–160 km

Approx. Travel Time: 5–7 hours excluding extended sightseeing stops

Route: Leh → Khardung La → Khalsar → Diskit → Hunder

Altitude: Khardung La is above 17,000 ft; altitude varies considerably along the route.

Overnight Stay: Nubra Valley

Meals: Breakfast

Wake up to the spectacular mountain scenery of Nubra Valley and enjoy breakfast at your accommodation.

Today is one of the most scenic driving days of the itinerary as you travel from Nubra Valley to Pangong Lake, generally via the Shyok route when road and local conditions permit.

Scenic Drive Through the Shyok Valley

After breakfast, check out and begin your journey towards Pangong Tso.

The route follows dramatic Himalayan landscapes, with the road winding alongside the Shyok River and through remote mountain terrain. This is a journey where the scenery itself becomes a major attraction.

The exact route may vary depending on road conditions, local permissions and seasonal accessibility. The commonly used Nubra–Pangong route is around 160 km and can take approximately 5–7 hours, although actual travel time can be longer due to road conditions and sightseeing stops.

Remote Himalayan Landscapes

As you continue towards Pangong, the landscape becomes increasingly rugged and remote. The journey offers changing views of rocky mountains, river valleys, high-altitude plateaus and small settlements.

Keep your camera ready because this section of the journey provides some of the most dramatic road-trip scenery in Ladakh.

Arrival at Pangong Lake

Reach Pangong Tso, one of the most iconic destinations on any Ladakh tour package.

Situated at a very high altitude, the lake stretches dramatically across the Himalayan landscape, with mountains rising on either side. The water can appear in different shades of blue depending on sunlight, weather and viewing angle.

After reaching your accommodation, complete check-in and take time to rest. Avoid strenuous activity because Pangong is located at a considerably higher altitude than Leh.

Pangong Sunset Experience

Later in the evening, head towards the lakeside for a peaceful sunset experience.

As the sun begins to descend behind the mountains, the colours of the lake and surrounding landscape gradually change. The combination of the blue lake, barren mountains and changing evening light creates one of the most memorable photographic moments of a Leh Ladakh holiday.

Spend the evening enjoying the peaceful surroundings before returning to your camp or cottage.

Approx. Distance: 160 km

Approx. Travel Time: 5–7 hours, subject to road conditions and route accessibility

Route: Nubra → Shyok/Agham region → Durbuk → Tangtse → Pangong

Travel Note: The Shyok route is subject to seasonal and local road conditions. An alternate routing may be required when the direct route is not operational.

Overnight Stay: Pangong Lake – Camp / Cottage / Resort

Meals: Breakfast

Wake up early if you wish to experience the peaceful morning atmosphere at Pangong Lake.

The early hours can be particularly beautiful, with the surrounding mountains reflected in the calm water when weather conditions are favourable. Enjoy breakfast at your accommodation before checking out.

Drive Back Towards Leh

Begin your return journey towards Leh.

Depending on the selected route and current road conditions, the journey generally passes through high-altitude mountain terrain and may include a crossing of Chang La Pass.

The road provides a completely different perspective of the landscapes experienced during the onward journey. The barren mountains, winding roads and high-altitude valleys make the drive an integral part of the Ladakh experience.

High-Altitude Mountain Scenery

The journey back can take several hours, so keep the day flexible. Road conditions, traffic, weather and high-altitude passes can influence the actual travel time.

Take appropriate breaks along the route, stay hydrated and avoid unnecessary physical exertion.

Check-in & Relaxation in Leh

Upon reaching Leh, check in to your hotel and take some time to rest after the long mountain drive.

The remainder of the evening can be kept free for relaxation or shopping. If you feel comfortable, visit Leh Market to purchase Ladakhi handicrafts, prayer flags, woollens, souvenirs, dry fruits and other local products.

You may also enjoy a relaxed dinner at a local restaurant and spend your final evening in Leh reflecting on the spectacular landscapes experienced during the trip.

Approx. Distance: 135–160 km

Approx. Travel Time: 5–7 hours depending on route and road conditions

Route: Pangong → Durbuk → Chang La / alternate approved route → Leh

Overnight Stay: Leh

Meals: Breakfast

Enjoy breakfast at your hotel and complete the check-out formalities.

Depending on your flight departure time, your driver will transfer you to Leh Airport.

As you leave Ladakh, you carry memories of high mountain passes, ancient monasteries, dramatic Himalayan landscapes, Nubra's cold desert, the unique Bactrian camel experience and the unforgettable blue waters of Pangong Lake.

Your Leh Ladakh tour package concludes with your departure from Leh.
